    Estate

    Domaine Alphonse Mellot is a historic family-owned estate in Sancerre, dating back to the 16th century. Today, it is led by Alphonse Mellot Jr. and is known for biodynamic practices and artisanal winemaking. The estate spans approximately 30 hectares, entirely within the Sancerre AOC. It produces both white and red wines, with Pinot Noir as the sole red variety. The estate enjoys excellent reputation in the Loire and abroad.

    Vineyard

    The vineyard lies on the slopes of Sancerre and features a mix of flint, limestone, and clay soils, specifically "terres blanches," ideal for Pinot Noir. Vines are cultivated with biodynamic methods, promoting soil health and biodiversity. The location's altitude and exposure ensure full grape ripeness. Yield control and manual farming provide concentration and complexity. Natural cover cropping and careful plowing preserve terroir expression.

    This Sancerre Rouge 2021 by Domaine Alphonse Mellot is a terroir-driven wine showing elegance and precision. It reveals the classic Loire Valley Pinot Noir character: vibrant fruit and fine acidity. Structured yet delicate, the wine balances red berries with subtle earthiness.     Vintage

    The 2021 season was cool and wet in spring, followed by a temperate summer. This led to a slow but even ripening of grapes. The harvest delivered healthy fruit with refreshing acidity. The wines of 2021 are aromatic, precise, and balanced. Red wines from the region show purity, moderate alcohol, and vibrant structure.

    Vinification & Aging

    Grapes are hand-harvested at full ripeness. Fermentation occurs in wooden tronconic vats with gentle maceration and limited punch-downs to preserve finesse. The wine is matured about 12 months in French oak barrels, partially new. Little to no filtration is done to respect the wine's integrity. Light fining is applied only if necessary before bottling at the estate.

    Serve between 14 and 16°C. Decant an hour before tasting to enhance aromatic complexity.
