A Family Passion Dedicated to Terroir
Since the early 2000s, brothers Jean-Philippe and Jean-Guillaume Bret have been elevating the reputation of the Mâconnais with wines that capture the finesse and complexity of Chardonnay. Their journey began with the revival of their family estate, La Soufrandière, a historic vineyard in Pouilly-Vinzelles. Driven by a profound respect for nature and an unrelenting pursuit of purity, they launched Bret Brothers in 2001, a boutique négociant operation allowing them to work with exceptional terroirs beyond their own vineyards.
Living Soils and Precision Viticulture
Located in the southern part of Burgundy, their vineyards rest on Jurassic-era clay-limestone soils formed nearly 180 million years ago. This diverse geological patchwork, combined with ideal sun exposure, enables the vines to extract the full potential of their terroir. Understanding that great wine starts in the vineyard, the Bret brothers have practiced biodynamic farming from the outset. Chemical treatments are entirely banned, replaced by natural preparations and techniques that enhance biodiversity.
Minimal Intervention Winemaking for Pure Expression
In the cellar, the philosophy is simple: guide the wine without interference. Each parcel is vinified separately to preserve its unique character. Fermentations occur naturally with indigenous yeasts, and aging takes place primarily in neutral oak barrels to avoid overpowering the fruit. There are no unnecessary additives: no commercial yeasts, no chaptalization, and sulfur is used sparingly. The result? Vibrant, precise wines with remarkable energy.
Exceptional Wines that Define the Mâconnais
Every Bret Brothers cuvée is a tribute to the terroirs of southern Burgundy. Their Pouilly-Fuissé, sourced from old vines, offers remarkable complexity and minerality, while their Saint-Véran stands out with its tension and bright citrus notes. Their Mâcon-Villages, both accessible and refined, highlights the freshness of Chardonnay. By rigorously selecting grapes from growers who share their philosophy, they extract the essence of each terroir, from the steep slopes of Vergisson to the deeper soils of Vinzelles.
A Rising Influence in the Wine World
Through their unwavering commitment to clean viticulture and honest winemaking, the Bret Brothers have become a benchmark in the Mâconnais. Their work has played a key role in the region’s ascent, gaining recognition on top wine lists and among collectors. Representing a new generation of Burgundian winemakers, they remain deeply rooted in tradition while embracing the future of fine wine.
